Painting

My work is inspired by landscapes I know well - northern England and the Yorkshire Dales where I live – but is just as much about the enjoyment of what paint will do and the suggestions it makes to me during the working process.

Like my ceramics the work is often very textural and may contain collaged fragments, or be influenced by an initial ground – textured by inclusions, or erosions. The images are never from direct observation but emerge from a gestural and expressionistic overlaying and sometimes mixing of media - until I feel I have captured some sense of space, or remembered place. Maybe for this reason the apparent view point often seems detached, hovering high up, giving a ‘bird’s eye’ view.
